Couture Training for Lesnar

October 16, 2008 · 2 Comments

One of the most anticipated MMA fights just around the corner and is the main event of UFC 91 on November 15th.  Randy Couture vs. Brock Lesner.

Randy has been here (Xtreme Couture ) at his training camp religiously every morning and evening training for his battle with Brock.

Couture is as focused and determined as ever and we’ve included a few training photos for you to check out.

The speed and power of Randy’s training is mesmerizing and almost a blur at times.

With the help of Jake Bonacci Randy’s cardio is top notch.

Just a good everyday workout, if your not soaking wet, you’re not training hard enough!

Finally, below is an older clip with Randy and Brock on ESPN talking about their upcoming fight.

It just shows again the class and respect both of these guys have toward one another.

Ryan Nichols visits Xtreme Couture as part of his historic journey…

October 15, 2008 · 1 Comment

Ryan Nichols, a quadrapalegic, made a stop by Xtreme Couture MMA here in Las Vegas as part of his 13 day, 800 mile journey on his handcycle from Salt Lake City, UT to Huntington Beach, CA. He was met by UFC heavyweight champion, Randy “The Natural” Couture, for a quick chat and some motivational words before he set off again to take advantage of what little sunlight was left in the day.

Ryan and his team said they were ahead of schedule, and at halfway through the trip, Ryan looked like a man who had peddled 4 miles, instead of the 400 that he had racked up upon arriving at our door. Spirits were high and the conversation between Nichols and Couture was lighthearted and fun. The visit was very inspiring to us here at Xtreme Couture. It proves without a doubt that with hard work and determination, no goal you set will be unreachable.

Fox News cameras were on the scene to cover the visit and conduct an interview with Mr. Nichols before he got back on the road to continue he record breaking voyage. You can view thier article here. We posted some of the pictures below that we took yesterday during his visit.

We would again like to say thank you to Ryan Nichols for making us a part of his journey and to say good luck on the rest of it!

Night Of Combat II – Event Results

October 13, 2008 · Leave a Comment

MMA fans got to see a great card put together in part by Skip Kelp (Superfights MMA) and Kim Couture (KC Concepts). Xtreme Couture fighters took seven out of eight fights in a Night Of Combat II that left the fans wanting more!

The Co-Main event featuring Rick Roufus (4-3), a six-time world kickboxing champion and UFC veteran Hector Ramirez (7-3-1) was a fifteen minute battle which both fighters left it all in the ring.

Ramirez won the fight via unanimous decision but Roufus landed several impressive strikes in the first round, including a spinning backfist that staggered the “Sick Dog”.

All three judges scored the fight 29-28. Ramirez added another win to his resume.

In the co-feature, Jay Hieron (16-4) won a bloody unanimous decision over Chris Kennedy (6-6).

Hieron went to work with a devastating ground and pound game letting Kennedy know immediately that Jay’s elbows should be called weapons of mass destruction which left Kennedy bloody and a fist size welt on his forehead in the second which only got worse.

“He’s a warrior,” Hieron said. “He was bloody and kept going.”

“It’s been a long time since I’ve been able to use my elbows,” Hieron said. “That’s my weapon.”

All three judges scored the fight 30-27.

Kennedy, a local Las Vegas fighter, stepped up on short notice after Bryson Kamaka, who had been scheduled to fight Hieron, tested positive for marijuana during pre-fight testing by the Nevada State Athletic Commission.

Mike Pyle (17-5-1) won via submission over Brian Gassaway (28-18-2).

Pyle used a ground and pound attack before finishing with an armbar at 4:21 of the first round.

“I made sure I got a good clean takedown,” Pyle said. “I kind of wanted to pound him out and make him quit, but I’ll take the submission.”

Gideon Ray (15-10-1) completely helpless against John Alessio’s (24-11) heavy hands.

Alessio knocked out Gideon in just 45 seconds into the first round and a bit of payback for some heated words at wiegh-ins which prompted Gideon’s cheap shot shoving tactic.

Gideon continued to show little class when exiting the ring with an ice pack on his forehead, Ray threatened some of Alessio’s supporters sing ringside and was held back by his camp.

Chalk one one up for the good guys!

Josh Haynes (11-10) beat Sean Salmon (15-5),  at 2:49 of the second round with an achilles lock.

Haynes dropped Salmon with a heavy left hook early in the first. In the second, Haynes again dropped Salmon with a straight right. Salmon with a solid chin held on for second time and got up to continue the fight. When the fight went tot he ground Haynes not known for his ground game took complete control and ended the fight with a submission.

A NIGHT OF COMBAT ll

October 11, 2008 · 3 Comments

A NIGHT OF COMBAT ll October 11th at The Thomas & Mack Center, LAS VEGAS

featuring Up and coming AND top fighters from Xtreme Couture !!

Ian Omalza v Ryan Hass

“I like to stand & bang”, Ian Omalza stated about his fighting style.  While this young fighter is just starting out and likes to wrestle, he feels he’s well rounded from all the training hes been doing with his family of fighters at Xtreme Couture.  Ian anticipates an exciting fight, whether its standing or goes to the ground.  When asked how this fight will end, Ian said “1st round KO, with alot of crazy punches with my eyes closed!”

Elena “Baby Doll” Reid v Stephanie Palmer

A stand up striker, Elena has collected several belts from her years of boxing all over the world.  Realizing she may find more opportunities in MMA, shes now moving on to take her fight career to a whole new level.  Shes eager to have gotten her 2nd MMA fight right here in Vegas, which she excitedly referred to as “The Hollywood of fighting”.  While her recent training camp has included a special focus on takedown defenses, Elena been working her wrestling and jiujitsu with her friends at Xtreme Couture, and will be throwing explosive punches whether shes standing or on the ground.  Her pretty doll face with a purely kind personality to match should in no way be underestimated. Look for her to be throwing body shots in hopes of a KO win.

Patrick “Kui” Gonsalves v Shawn David

A freestyle fighter, right at the very start of his fight career, “Kui” is a strong striker with a wrestling backround.  During this training camp at Xtreme Couture, his emphasis has been in training for a Southpaw opponent, and is hoping for a KO -no matter what round.

JJ “The angel of death” Mix v John Halverson

This Mixed Martial Artist is the complete package.  A virtually unknown fighter up until this point, many fighters from his training camp at Xtreme Couture have said this fight will be THE fight to watch. JJ Mix is looking forward to this fight, not only as its a huge career opportunity, but because of his well-known opponent UFC vet John Halverson.

Josh “Bring the Pain” Haynes v Sean Salmon

Xtreme Couture fighter and UFC vet Josh Haynes sees this as an intense fight, and is in no way overlooking his opponent.  Sean Salmon took this fight with 1 weeks notice and is just coming off a 10 -month suspension with the California Athletic Division.  Both fighters have stated they are eager to be fighting an opponent with a well-known name, and are preparing themselves mentally for a 15-minute battle.

John “The Natural” Alessio v Gideon Ray

Don’t miss as Mike Tyson walks out this solid submission fighter!  Hes ready to take on his southpaw opponent Gideon Ray, as Alessio’s fought southpaw opponents in his last 3 fights.  And while he knows Gideon to be a seasoned vet, Xtreme Couture’s 2nd Natural believes he still has better jiu jitsu & wrestling, and said in his prefight interview that by submission or knockout, he WILL have his hands raised at the end of this fight!

Mike “Quicksand” Pyle v Brian Gassaway

A complete, well rounded mixed martial artist, Pyle stated simply, that you’re only as good as the people you train with, and that he’s surrounded by his team of Champions at Xtreme Couture.  When asked about how this fight will play out, Pyle calmy and with confidence said: “I’ll hit him, he’ll hit me, we’ll wrestle, I’ll choke him and I will win”

Jay “Thorobred” Hieron v Chris Kennedy

A freestyle fighter, Jay has worked hard, as always, to get himself into the tremendous shape hes in now.  Training equally in all aspects of MMA, Hieron is all smiles, relaxed and ready for wherever this fight goes.

He will be fighting this Saturday, Oct.11th at “Night Of Combat II” at the Thomas & Mack Center. His opponent is Shawn David who also holds a record of 1 win and no losses. He says that working out with all the top tier fighters at Xtreme Couture definitly has its benefits. He also commented that he takes a pretty good beating sometimes. All in all,  he loves training here because the only way you will get better,  is training with the best. BloodDoc

Xtreme Couture welcomes advanced blood chemist for sports performance Dr. John Fitzgerald.

John has always been involved in athletics.  He was an All-State Linebacker in Iowa and set a school record for the most tackles in a season.  He was then elected into his high school football hall of fame in 2006.

John played college football as a weak side linebacker and lettered as a freshman.  He hurt his neck and shoulders and was helped by a chiropractor that worked with athletes.  The chiropractor was Dr. David Johnson, whose son, Zach Johnson won the Masters Golf tournament a couple years ago.

While in college, John began broadcasting high school football games.  He even remembers interviewing quarterback Kurt Warner and several other future pro players after their high school games.

John was a chemistry major at the time and was so impressed with Dr. Johnson that he decided to go to transfer colleges and go to chiropractic school.  While in college, he was still interested in chemistry and became heavily involved in going to outside nutrition seminars after finding out that his father had cancer.

After college, John opened a clinic that focused on both Nutritional medicine and chiropractic.  In 1996, he started doing a radio show that was focused on nutritional medicine.  He ended up being on the radio for 5 years on 4 different stations that had coverage in North and South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida.  His practice rapidly grew to over 3000 patients with an emphasis on Nutritional medicine.

In 1998, John was asked to be the team doctor for the Carolina Hurricanes which were a team in the now defunct minor league to the NFL.  His focus with this team was on sports performance and to help players advance to the NFL, World League and USFL.  John became known for helping athletes get the most out of their bodies.

He has worked with many college and professional athletes primarily in football, tennis, boxing, wrestling, power lifting and now MMA.

A few quick facts:

-          Degrees held:

-          Associate of Science Degree

-          Bachelors of Science Degree

Saturday Oct. 4th “EliteXC Heat” Gina Carano

October 3, 2008 · 2 Comments

One of our team members, Gina Carano who holds a record of 6 wins and no losses, will be fighting live Saturday, October 4th on CBS network television. Her opponent for the EliteXC Heat show will be Kelly Kobald, who holds a record of 16-2-1.  Born April 16th 1982, Gina grew up here locally.  She attended The University of Nevada Reno for a year and then went on to the University of Las Vegas Nevada for three more years studying Psychology.

Gina is also well known as “Crush” on The American Gladiator television show on NBC. As a mixed martial artist, her specialty is Muay Thai, but is also very well rounded with heavy hands.  She has wins via KO, TKO stoppage, and submission under her belt.  She has also traveled all over the world fighting, whether kickboxing or MMA.  Gina has been labeled by many as the face of women’s MMA, however she would rather be referred to a just a great fighter.  She trains her butt off here at Xtreme Couture, and I believe she has a very promising future in the sport of mixed martial arts.  You don’t want to miss this battle, fireworks guaranteed!!!! Stay tuned in for all of the post fight details covering Gina’s fight when she returns from Florida next week.
