A lightweight matchup between undefeated prospects Ryan Couture (1-0 MMA, 1-0 SF) and Lee Higgins (2-0 MMA, 0-0 SF) is official for February.
Strikeforce officials today announced that Couture and Higgins will meet at the Showtime-broadcast Strikeforce Challengers 14 event.
Featuring a lightweight main event between Lyle Beerbohm and Pat Healy, Strikeforce Challengers 14 takes place Feb. 18 at Cedar Park Center in Cedar Park, Texas, and airs live on Showtime.
Couture, 28, made a successful professional debut this past August at Strikeforce Challengers 10 when he submitted Lucas Stark with a first-round triangle choke.
Couture is currently in training for the bout at Xtreme Couture in Las Vegas. He was scheduled to fight this past November at Strikeforce Challengers 12 before a staph infection forced him to withdraw from a bout with Juan Zapata.
“I was down for a few weeks, but now I’m ready to fight and looking forward to fighting in Texas on Feb. 18,” Couture stated in today’s official release. “I’m excited and working hard. I expect a tough fight.”
Higgins has won both of his professional fights by first-round rear-naked choke. He trains out of Urban Jungle Self Defense in Houston.
A Brazilian jiu-jitsu blue belt, Higgins said he’s excited to face the son of UFC Hall of Famer Randy Couture.
“This is a great opportunity and an honor for me to fight the son of a legend,” Higgins said. “I couldn’t believe it when they offered me the fight. To get a chance to show my skills and make a name for myself on television is very exciting and absolutely a huge deal.”
Ryan Couture is managed by Xtreme Couture Management. Xtreme Couture Management is Randy’s Couture’s newly formed fighter management company which currently manages up and coming select fighters.
