Gil Guardado

Starting his Mixed Martial Arts career a little under ten years ago, Gil Guardado has not only risen up the ranks as one of the top Strength and Conditioning coaches in the sport, but also as one of the fastest-growing fighters.

Guardado grew up in southern California, where he first got his start in wrestling. “I loved the fact that there was one-on-one competition,” said Guardado. His interest in the sport quickly escalated into MMA after a fight he had seen with his late father.

“It was the Randy Couture against Tito Ortiz card,” Guardado said. “I’ll never forget my dad looking at me during one of the fights on that card and saying ‘these guys are around your weight, you think you could do what they do?’ From then on, I was hooked.”

Guardado began his training from then on, taking on the role of Strength and Conditioning coach as well as amateur fighter. As he was becoming certified as a personal trainer, he was training himself. “There were times I’d be in the gym for 12 hours, training for my fight, and then training a class or doing a private session afterwards,” Guardado said.

The hard work has paid off, as Guardado is still undefeated in his young career, posting an 8-0 record as an amateur, as well as 3-0 as a professional. He is also the lead Strength and Conditioning coach at Xtreme Couture, with clients such as Randy Couture himself. Guardado hosts an array of circuit-training classes Monday through Friday at Xtreme Couture, and offers private sessions for those looking for a more personal experience.

Guardado was also previously involved with “It Ain’t Chemo”, an organization built to help the fight against Cancer. Guardado was on the executive board, before stepping down due to conflicting schedules with his coaching and training regimen.

For now, Guardado focuses on his training and his clients, still posting long hours at the gym. He is sure, though, that in the end it will all pay off. “I want to keep fighting and move up in the ranks,” Guardado said. “I want to fight on television, I want to fight on pay-per-view, and I want to win a world title.”

The foundation was especially formed to raise money and awareness for those wounded in action and their families. To date, more than 24,000 U.S. troops have been wounded in the war against terrorism, which doesn’t include the many more suffering the mental effects.

Many of the injuries are traumatic amputations, gunshot wounds, burns and blast injuries that will retire these brave men and woman from the armed forces. Even though some of these men and woman are severely injured, they have the courage, strength and determination to win this battle.
